A LITTLE GUIDANCE
Download & File Transfer Time Calculator guide
Convert file size to bits and divide by the effective transfer speed for a theoretical duration.
How to use
- Enter the file size and choose MB, GB, MiB or GiB.
- Set speed in Mbps or Gbps and efficiency above 0% and at most 100%.
- Review the estimated duration at that effective speed.
Worked example
- Input
- Enter a 1 GB file, a 100 Mbps connection and 100% efficiency.
- Result
- Using 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes, the estimate is 80 seconds, or 1 minute 20 seconds.
Common questions
How do MB and MiB differ?
One MB is 1,000,000 bytes; one MiB is 1,048,576 bytes. Match the unit shown for your file because identical numbers can represent different sizes.
Will the estimate equal the actual download time?
It is theoretical. Efficiency represents the fraction of the entered speed available for transfer. Server limits, congestion and connection changes can affect real duration.
